James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling: The Orlando Owner’s Guide

James Hardie bathroom remodeling in Orlando typically runs $9,000 to $28,000 for a full tear-out and rebuild. That range covers everything from replacing water-damaged HardieBacker board behind a failing shower to a complete master bath renovation with new waterproofing, tile, and fixtures. Most Orlando homeowners call us after they spot the first signs of trouble: cracked grout, soft spots in the wall, or the musty smell of moisture trapped behind cement board that was never sealed properly. You’re here because you have a James Hardie product, or you’re planning to use their cement board in a bathroom, and you need someone who knows how it behaves in Florida humidity.

We stock HardieBacker cement board in multiple thicknesses, including the 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch panels used for Florida bathroom walls and wet areas. If your existing board has failed, we match it and reinstall it correctly. If you’re remodeling, we price the entire job before we pick up a hammer.

Which James Hardie Models This Applies To

Most Orlando bathrooms use one of two James Hardie products: HardieBacker 1/4-inch cement board for floors and countertops, or HardieBacker 500 (the 1/2-inch version) for shower walls and wet-area surrounds. The 500 designation refers to its compressive strength rating, and it’s the product you want behind tile in a shower that gets daily use. Some older Orlando homes still have HardieSoffit or HardiePanel fiber cement from the 1990s repurposed in bathroom applications. That’s a compatibility problem we see often, especially in College Park and Winter Park bungalows renovated in the 2000s.

Here’s the gotcha most homeowners miss: HardieBacker is cement board, not waterproofing. It resists moisture, but it does not stop water. In a Florida bathroom where humidity is constant and showers run hot daily, cement board must be paired with a waterproofing membrane or liquid-applied sealant. When builders skip that step, the board wicks water and fails from the stud side outward. We redo more of these than any other bathroom failure. If you don’t know which membrane was used behind your tile, call us before you open the wall. We’ll tell you what to look for.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: HardieBacker is the OEM product, and we use it almost exclusively. The brand is consistent, the board doesn’t warp, and it accepts thin-set mortar predictably. Aftermarket cement boards exist, but the cost savings is usually under $2 per square foot, and the consistency issues in Florida’s humidity aren’t worth it. We also stock and install complementary products from KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone when the project calls for new cabinetry or countertops alongside the bathroom work.

Signs Your James Hardie Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing

  • Grout cracking along the shower floor and lower wall seams. Cement board expands and contracts slightly with Florida temperature swings. When it’s not properly gapped at the seams, that movement transfers into the tile and cracks the grout. Water gets in, and the board starts soaking it up.
  • Soft or flexing spots in the wall. You press on the tile and feel give. That’s typically the cement board delaminating from water exposure or the studs behind it starting to rot. In Orlando’s humid climate, this accelerates fast once it starts.
  • Musty or earthy smell that won’t go away. That’s mold feeding on damp cement board and the drywall or wood behind it. You won’t solve it with cleaning products. The board has to come out.
  • Tile popping loose or falling off. Cement board holds tile well when installed correctly. When it’s saturated, thin-set mortar loses its bond and tiles release. You’ll usually see this in the lower third of the shower first.
  • Discoloration or staining bleeding through grout. Rust-colored or dark stains indicate water has been sitting against the board and extracting minerals or carrying contaminants. By the time you see the stain, the water has been there for months.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A wood double vanity with two mirrors after a bathroom remodel

For Orlando homeowners, a full bathroom remodel with James Hardie cement board installation runs $9,000 to $28,000 depending on the size of the room, the extent of water damage, and the finishes you choose. A small bathroom replacing just the shower surround and flooring falls at the lower end, around $5,000 to $12,000 on its own. A tub-to-shower conversion with new HardieBacker, waterproofing, tile, and fixtures lands between $3,500 and $10,000.

What drives the range more than anything is what we find when we open the wall. Rotted studs, failed waterproofing, and old plumbing all add labor and materials. That’s why we give you a written price before any work starts. Not a verbal ballpark. A written line-item price. You’ll know what the parts cost, what the labor costs, and what the warranty covers. Every job we complete is covered for 365 days from the completion date. If something isn’t right within that year, we come back and make it right at no cost to you. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it applies to every bathroom remodel we do in Orlando.

DIY or Call Us?

Installing cement board looks straightforward on a YouTube video, but in a wet area it’s genuinely unforgiving. The danger here isn’t springs or high voltage. It’s what happens six months after you finish: the tile looks fine, but water is getting behind it because the seams weren’t taped and mudded, or the waterproofing was skipped, or the board was screwed into the curb wrong. Cement board installation is not a beginner-level project in a shower. The mistake you make is invisible until it costs thousands.

Here’s what you can safely do yourself: inspect the grout lines, check for soft spots, and note where you see staining. That’s useful information that helps us price the repair accurately. Then call us at (850) 920-7745. Isaac Pruett will ask you what you’re seeing, tell you whether it sounds like a board failure or something else, and give you an honest read before anyone schedules a visit. Tell me what the problem is. We’ll figure out the rest from there.
