Schluter Kitchen Remodeling: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
Schluter kitchen remodeling in Orlando typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed, depending on the scope of the waterproofing, uncoupling, and trim work involved. We stock Schluter-compatible materials including KERDI-BOARD, DITRA-HEAT, and Schluter edge profiles, and we schedule Orlando installations on a timeline we commit to in writing before the first tool comes out. Most homeowners discover a Schluter problem the hard way: a tile edge that has begun to lift, a shower bench or kitchen backsplash seam that has started to separate, or water staining that suggests the waterproofing layer underneath has failed after years of Florida humidity.
We are an independent Orlando remodeling contractor, not affiliated with Schluter Systems, and we work with their full product line because it is the standard in modern tile installations. If you are holding a cracked Schluter trim piece or staring at grout that will not stay sealed, tell us what the problem is. We’ll figure out the rest from there.
Which Schluter Models This Applies To

Schluter makes a range of products for kitchen remodeling, and the compatibility questions are different depending on which product line you are dealing with. The most common pieces we replace or install in Orlando kitchens include KERDI-BOARD (the rigid waterproof building panel used behind tile), DITRA and DITRA-HEAT (uncoupling and floor-heating membranes), and the metal finishing profiles in the Schluter edge family, including SCHIENE, RONDEC, QUADEC, and DECO.
The gotcha with Schluter profiles is that they are not interchangeable across series. A SCHIENE piece is designed for wall transitions with a specific channel depth for the tile thickness you have. A RONDEC has a rounded profile for outside corners and looks entirely different. If you grab the wrong series, the profile will sit proud of the tile or sink below it, and the edge will never look right. Check the stamped lettering on the back of the metal. Schluter stamps each profile with its series name and size. If the stamp has worn away, measure the visible face width in millimeters. That number usually corresponds to the size designation.
For KERDI-BOARD, the Orlando humidity consideration is real. Schluter panels are waterproof, but the seams are only waterproof if they are sealed with KERDI-BAND and KERDI-FIX or an equivalent Schluter-approved method. We have pulled apart kitchen backsplashes in Orlando where a previous installer skipped the seam banding, and water has been sitting behind the tile for years. The tile looked fine from the front. The framing behind it told a different story.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Schluter profiles are aluminum, brass, or stainless, and the genuine pieces carry a consistent finish and dimension that cheaper lookalikes rarely match. For the waterproofing membranes, there is no aftermarket equivalent we would stand behind in an Orlando kitchen. The Schluter warranty only applies when the system is installed per specification, and the materials are the least expensive part of any tile job. Skimping there saves pennies and risks thousands in water damage.

Signs Your Schluter Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing
- Loose or hollow-sounding tile. Tile that sounds hollow when tapped usually means the bond has broken between the tile and the substrate below. With Schluter systems, this is rarely the membrane failing and almost always an installation or thinset coverage problem. A hollow tile in an Orlando kitchen is going to crack eventually, especially in the wet zones around the sink.
- Decorative profile pulling away from the wall. Schluter metal trim pieces rely on a perforated anchoring leg that gets embedded in thinset. If the thinset was mixed too dry or the leg was not fully bedded, the profile will start lifting at one end. This is cosmetic and fixable, but a lifted profile edge will catch a sponge or a dish towel and bend, and bent aluminum does not go back.
- Grout cracking repeatedly in the same lines. If you have regrouted the same seam twice and it keeps cracking, the floor or wall is moving. Schluter DITRA membranes are designed to absorb movement between the subfloor and tile, but they cannot fix a structurally compromised subfloor. In Orlando slab homes, this often shows up as hairline cracks running in straight lines through the tile, following the concrete seam below.
- Musty smell or staining at the base of a tiled wall. Water is getting behind the tile. With a properly installed KERDI system, that should not happen. When it does, the usual culprits are unsealed seams, a gap at the floor transition, or someone used drywall screws through the membrane after the fact to hang a shelf. That last one is more common in Orlando kitchens than we would like to admit.
- DITRA-HEAT floor that heats unevenly or trips the breaker. The heating cable under a DITRA-HEAT membrane is durable, but a nick during tile installation will eventually fail. If one section of your heated floor runs cold or the thermostat keeps tripping, the cable likely has a fault. Repairs mean lifting the tile in that section, which is not a weekend project.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed cost for Schluter kitchen remodeling work in Orlando breaks down by scope. A focused repair, such as replacing a single section of Schluter trim profile or repairing a failed waterproofing seam, is typically part of a backsplash installation ranging from $800 to $2,500. A full kitchen remodel that includes Schluter waterproofing on the wet walls and DITRA underlayment on the floors runs $14,000 to $45,000. Countertop installation with Schluter edge profiles underneath the tile runs $2,000 to $6,500.
What drives the price is access and substrate condition. If we open the wall in an Orlando kitchen and find the framing behind the tile is water-damaged, that framing repair is additional work and we will tell you before we proceed. We write the price before any work starts, on every project, every time. That is not negotiable and it has never been waived at Mason Remodeling.
Every Schluter-related installation we perform is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the work is not right within a year of completion, we come back and make it right at no cost to you. And if a repair or installation fails, we return for a second visit free, no charge, no dispute process, no conditions.
DIY or Call Us?
There are things you can safely check yourself. If a Schluter profile is lifting at one end, you can look at it: is the tile behind it still solid? Is there a gap where the profile leg has pulled out of the bed? If the tile feels loose too, you have a bonding problem and you should stop and call us. If the trim is the only issue, a careful re-seat with thinset is possible for a patient DIYer, but the finish has to be perfectly flush or you will see it every time you walk into the kitchen.
The waterproofing repairs are not DIY territory. Once water has been getting behind tile, you have to remove tile to find the full extent of the damage. Cutting into a KERDI membrane and re-sealing it correctly takes an experienced hand, and doing it wrong means the leak continues behind your new backsplash. That is a bad place to learn. FAQs

Installed correctly, a Schluter waterproofing and uncoupling system should last as long as the tile itself, which in a Florida kitchen is commonly 20 to 30 years or more. The failure points are installation errors and substrate movement, not the Schluter materials. Our work is backed for 365 days, and the Schluter system carries its own manufacturer warranty when installed to specification.
If your Schluter installation is failing early, call (850) 920-7745. We will tell you honestly whether it is a material issue, an installation issue, or a subfloor problem underneath everything.
Yes, many Schluter failures can be repaired without a full kitchen remodel. A lifted edge profile can often be re-bedded. A failed KERDI seam can be cut out and re-sealed with KERDI-BAND. The variable is hidden damage, and the only way to know is to open the area and look.
Call (850) 920-7745 for an exact assessment. The estimate is free, and we will show you what we find before we recommend any work.
Most focused Schluter repairs in an Orlando kitchen take one to two days, including curing time for thinset and sealant. A full kitchen remodel with Schluter waterproofing typically runs four to eight weeks depending on scope, and we put the timeline in writing before work starts.
Call (850) 920-7745 and we will give you a realistic schedule for your specific job.
We stock the Schluter profiles and membranes used in most Orlando kitchen installations, including KERDI-BOARD, DITRA, DITRA-HEAT cable, SCHIENE, RONDEC, and QUADEC in common sizes and finishes. If we do not have your exact part on the truck, we can source it through our supplier network, typically within a few days. We also work with KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria, and Silestone surfaces when your kitchen project extends beyond the tile work.
Call (850) 920-7745 with your part information and we will check stock while you are on the phone.
